Suggested Use: Lexapro is used to treat such a severe symptom of generalized anxiety disorder as depression. Depression is a serious medical condition that can affect patients’ personal lives, everyday activities, ability to study and learn new things, or to enjoy themselves. Since Lexapro is sometimes also used for stress, anxiety disorders, abnormal behavioral disorders and other psychiatric disorders, it can be prescribed to treat other conditions, not mentioned above. The nature of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors allows them to control the serotonin levels in the human brain and avoid depressed moods in anxiety disorder patients. Before Using This Product: Before you decide to use this product, make sure that you do not have an allergic response to Lexapro. Some medical tests may be taken to find out if you are allergic to this medication. Do not take Celexa or any other anxiety medication while using Lexapro. This medication should not be taken with any monoamine oxidase inhibitors (phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, rasagiline, or selegiline), or common St. John's wort. It can be life-threatening. Therefore, even if you stopped taking one of these medicines before staring the course of Lexapro treatment, wait for at least 2 weeks to let them be completely eliminated from your body. The same applies to the situation when you are taking Lexapro: wait for at least 2 weeks to let Lexapro be completely eliminated from your body before you start taking MAOIs. It is also unsafe to use Lexapro with any lithium-based drugs or antidepressant drugs that have a tricyclic molecular structure. Talk to your doctor if you take any other medicines with behavioral effect, antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs, H1-receptor-antagonist drugs, or drugs for body weight loss. Also tell your health specialist about any pharmaceutical products, food additives, minerals, herbs and vitamins that you take every day or occasionally. Taking Lexapro with any of the drugs that are contra-indicated during your treatment can result in severe mood swings, panic, high irritability, hypotension or hypertension, hallucinations, or even coma. In order to avoid any of these adverse effects, talk to your health specialist and discuss what medicine can make Lexapro treatment unsafe in your condition. Pharmacological treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorder also depends on the health condition of the patient in general. Therefore, you should tell your physician if any of your ancestors or you had a bipolar disorder (the patients of which experience extreme joy which then turns into a very deep depression), other mental illnesses, thoughts of hurting yourself, or addiction to drugs and alcoholic beverages. Do now take Lexapro if you have a severe liver, kidney or stomach condition that can make the use of this medicine unsafe for you. Treatment of anxiety disorders and depression is very often combined with some other therapies, such as cognitive therapy, psychotherapy, support groups, or in rare cases electroconvulsive therapy. However, if the patient undergoes an electroconvulsive therapy, Lexapro and other drugs of the same class should be used strictly under doctor’s supervision. Before taking Lexapro, you should tell your doctor if you are an expecting or nursing mother and discuss possible effect of this medicine on your baby. Do not take Lexapro if you may have an allergic response to this drug, any of its components, or other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Prescription: Take Lexapro according to your doctor’s prescription. This medicine is usually prescribed for depression and given in once-daily dosage in the morning with or without a meal. Read all the instructions that come with your medicine and follow them carefully. Reread them wherever you feel that you need to refresh your memory, as it is very important that you use this medicine strictly as directed. It is good to set a special time once a day when you take Lexapro, so you do not miss a dose and do not overdose. Do not stop using this medication when you feel that your condition improved because the symptoms may come back and it can even cause such an adverse reaction, as mood swings, irritation, giddiness, headache, sleeplessness, loss of energy, exhaustion, or strange sensations on the skin. When your physician decided that you should have a different dosage of this medicine every day, you will most likely have to be observed by your doctor carefully for several days to see if the change affects your condition. If you take this medicine on a daily basis and you missed one dose, take the medicine as soon as you can. If it is already time to take another dose, do not take two doses at the same time. Take one dose and continue taking Lexapro as prescribed. Warnings: Some adverse reactions caused by Lexapro can be intensified when the patient drinks alcohol or takes other drugs. Therefore, it is recommended to be extremely careful when you take Lexapro and avoid driving a car or performing activities that require your attention, concentration and mental work. Do not take it with any other pharmaceutical medications or products that may interfere with Lexapro’s effectiveness and cause such conditions as sleepiness and nervousness. There is usually some delay in body’s response to this kind of treatment. For instance, it takes this medicine from two to six weeks to act in case of depression and provide noticeable results. Therefore, it is advised that patients should accept this delay and should not take more medicine than prescribed, because the amount of drug used should be appropriately controlled. If you think you should change your dosage, talk to a physician first. In antidepressant treatment there is usually great possibility to have a suicidal impulse in children, or young adolescents. In any case, it is extremely important to assure that such patients and their condition are under strict supervision until the risk of suicide is considered minimal. Family members and friends should seek professional help for such patients if any of the following symptoms are found: irritability; panic or groundless fears; anxiousness; thoughts of death. In some rare cases, this medicine has also affected children’s development and growth. Your pediatrician will be monitoring your child’s condition while on Lexapro treatment. Do not take Lexapro with other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, because most commonly they have the same components which may lead to an overdose. If you have to finish your treatment with Lexapro, wait for at least half a month to let it be completely eliminated from your body before you take other medication, like monoamine oxidase inhibitors. In high dosage or in combination with other drugs, like MAOIs, Lexapro may cause a serotonin syndrome, which can be accompanied by such conditions as rigidity, high body temperature, hallucinations, spasms, coma, heart arrhythmia, shivering, excessive perspiration, retching, or stomach upset. Call your physician as soon as you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above. Rare cases of sexual dysfunction caused by Lexapro have been reported. They are usually characterized by a condition when the penis remains erect for several hours. If this happens to you, seek emergency assistance immediately, because if no medical help is provided quickly it may cause impotency. Do not take this medicine if you are an expecting or nursing mother unless you know your doctor approves it. Consult health specialists in your prenatal care center to learn if this medicine is safe for your baby. Patients may develop adverse reactions to some antidepressants. Do not take Lexapro if you know that your body may have an allergic response to this drug. If you are not sure that this medicine is right for you, do not perform any hazardous activity until you know that you do not have any adverse response to it. Unwanted Adverse Reaction: Patients that are being treated with antidepressants should be watched carefully for symptoms of a worsening depression and for an impulse to hurt themselves. Lexapro, like most other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, causes the following side effects: erectile dysfunction; gastric pain, upset stomach, or constipation; giddiness; sleepiness; sickness; exhaustion; strange behavioral patterns; lack of concentration and attention; heart arrhythmia; inability to remember things; fears and nervousness; ringing in the ears; nightmares; vision problems; or deeper depression. Lexapro may cause an allergic response in some individuals: skin eruption; labored respiration; swelling of body parts; high body temperature.
